Losing Your Job Can Be A Positive Experience
By: NayNay Butler
When you think of losing your job, you immediately think of how devastating this will be for you and your family. Many people are losing jobs every day and although this is not always a pleasant experience, you can make it a positive experience. You have heard the old adage “when one door closes another door opens”. There is actually some truth to that old adage. When we are being fired or laid off, we think of the negative emotional and financial impact it will have on us. Being without a job when you have so many financial responsibilities can take an emotional toll on you and your family, but thinking differently about your situation can make all the difference in the world. In order for positive things to happen in your life, you must keep positive thoughts in your head. Now is not the time for you to lie in bed and feel sorry for yourself. Your job loss gives you the opportunity to get busy doing other things. Positive things happen in your life when you make things happen.
1. Have Faith
The first thing you have to do is have faith in yourself and your abilities. You have to believe you are a talented individual or no one else will believe it. Have faith that although this seems to be a bad situation, in the end you will make it a positive situation. You have to really believe it with all of your heart and soul. Self-confidence is the key to success in life. Sometimes we hold ourselves back from being successful because we don’t believe we are good enough, but you are just as capable as the next person.
2. Re-Organize Your Life
We sometimes sabotage our opportunities for positive things to flow our way by not taking inventory of our lives in the present. What this means is to look at your life as a whole. Examine your finances and find ways that you can adjust some things. Go through and organize that pile of papers you have accumulated but never had time to do it. You will now have some time so just do it. Find anything in your life that you know you need to change, but have procrastinated. Re-organization gives your life renewed energy and puts you in the frame of mind for positive things to happen.
3. Explore New Opportunities
When you begin your new job search, think outside the box. Just because you have worked in one industry for fifteen years doesn’t mean you can’t use those skills in another industry. Don’t pigeon hole yourself. Be open to new job opportunities in different fields of work. Sometimes the skills you have learned over the years can be used in other fields that you never thought about. Research new and different job opportunities and try to select jobs that truly interest you. Don’t choose a job for the amount of money you can make, you should choose a job you enjoy doing. There is nothing worse than going to a job every day that you hate.
4. Consider Higher Education
Going back to school could be an option for you if you are totally changing your career or you just need a few classes to help you in your job search. Look up some technical schools in your area and see what programs they have to offer. Your local community college is also a place to visit to see if you could possibly take a few courses or enter a short term career program. There are many opportunities to further your education and it doesn’t have to take you four years to enter into a new career. Some programs are as short as six months to a year.
5. Exercise
You don’t have to join a gym and pay for that expense to exercise. You can just take long walks in your neighborhood. Go to your neighborhood park and breathe some fresh air. Exercise helps with depression, and it can also improve your health in many other ways. Keep moving, don’t become idle.
Being unemployed does not have to be a negative experience. Many positive things can come from losing a job. The main thing is to stay active and stay positive. Let family and friends know you are looking for a job. They may be able to aid you in your job search. Losing a job is something that is beyond your control, but you can control your future by staying focused on the positive things you can do to change your employment situation.
